The cello can live far beyond its traditional role yet keep the singing voice everyone loves. The Brazilian music of Jobim's A Felicidade, Gismonti's Palhaco and Jacob de Bandolim's choro Santa Morena are alive with rhythm, and the jazz standards of Nature Boy and Mancini's Slow Hot Wind evoke the moody quality that fits the cello so well. Sun Ra's A Call for All Demons takes us into a dissonant jazz mambo, and Don Julin's Collateral Damage again has a shifting chordal melancholy that tells an unresolved story.
