Norwegian singer Rebekka Bakken is one of Europe's most charismatic voices. With her unique blend of jazz, folk, pop, and Nordic melancholy, she has created a distinctive place in the international music scene. Since the early 2000s, she has released a string of acclaimed albums, including "The Art of How to Fall", her celebrated Tom Waits tribute "Little Drop of Poison", and most recently "Always on My Mind". Her powerful yet fragile voice and captivating stage presence have earned her a devoted following across Europe and beyond.
She was signed with Universal Music and Sony Music. Now she is back with her new Album "NORD" and her first release on Supreme Music Group. Rebekka Bakken sings entirely in her native Norwegian for the very first time - opening the door to a poetic and deeply emotional soundscape. Blending intimate original songs, timeless folk melodies, and spiritual hymns, the music resonates with both Nordic melancholy and universal beauty. This album is a moving return to her roots, a musical tribute to the Norwegian soul, and at the same time a universal statement on love, faith, and humanity.
"These songs have been alive in me since my childhood – hymns and folk melodies in Norwegian, the sound of my mother's voice, the echo of the church walls. I didn't want to sing them as memories. I wanted to rekindle them. To make them breathe, dance, pulsate – sometimes as soft as a whisper, sometimes powerful and thunderous.
Most of the pieces are in Norwegian, because that is my root, my language, my air. But in the middle is My Choicest Hours. This song unfolds in English, because the English language gave me enough distance to let go of the familiar and open myself up to something bigger. The lyrics are by the Sufi poet Rabia al-Basri. Suddenly, a new voice joins in – my friend Saleh Mahfoud from Syria sings in Arabic. This moment feels raw, hypnotic, as vast as the night sky. Not a detour, but a hinge – where the album opens up and embraces something bigger.
NORD is my way of transforming tradition into pulse. The old should not remain as heritage – it should vibrate again, not as the past, but as a living ritual. These songs do not belong to history. They belong to the body, the breath, the now." (Rebekka Bakken)
