Big Brother and the Holding Company were a lot like other bands from the era: They played a rough version of the blues and made a name for themselves thanks to San Francisco and Monterey affiliations. What singled them out was singer Janis Joplin, who injected some soul into the group's occasionally heavy-handed acid rock. 'Cheap Thrills' – their second album and last with Joplin – hit No. 1, shading even its most commercial moments in psychedelic guitar and unwashed genre-crossing rawness.
