Hank Williams, Jr. happily embraced his "Family Tradition," as he called it on the hit 1979 single that served as his commercial breakthrough and artistic touchstone. As the lone son of Hank Williams, the honky tonk singer whose music shaped the sound of country music in the 20th century and also provided its central myth, perhaps Hank Jr. was fated to follow in the footsteps of his father, but the remarkable thing about "Family Tradition" is how it was the first step in the singer creating his own formidable legacy. He had been recording music since he was a teenager, not infrequently reaching Billboard's country Top Ten, but in the late '70s he married the swagger of outlaw country with the thunder of country-rock, creating his own Southern-fried archetype: the bawdy, rowdy country singer who may be a shade too mean for his own good.
