Trondheim Jazz Orchestra - Savages (2015) (320)

This release is part jazz, part classical music & part rock music. Very interesting mixture with great brass parts and some nice vocals. I had heard it described as being like Magma but that isn't very accurate. Although there are some similarities in terms of approaching things from a European classical direction, the music isn't nearly as heavy and throbbing as Magma. Lo's compositions tend to be more vertical, relying very much on harmonies & atmosphere. Whereas Magma's music is much more linear and rhythmic. Having said all of that, Magma is still probably the closest comparison that could be made since this is music of great originality and considerable power. It will undoubtedly take many more listens to fully appreciate its scope! Highly recommended to listeners who appreciate great large ensemble music that can't be easily categorized!
