On their third album, Dry Cleaning takes a half-step back towards their roots without sacrificing an inch of forward momentum. Last time around on Stumpwork, the London foursome pulled definitively away from the stark, thrillingly visceral post-punk sounds of their 2021 debut album. But Secret Love brings some of those early '80s vibes back into the picture while still finding time to take things in a few previously unexplored directions. The album's first half is where Dry Cleaning digs into its Slits/Raincoats playbook, with the in-the-pocket punk-funk grooves of "Hit My Head All Day," the spindly but insistent Fall-like riffing of the title track, and the off-kilter shadow play of the vaguely Stranglers-ish "Cruise Ship Designer." But around the record's midpoint, after you've been lulled into a false sense of stylistic security, things really begin to open up.
